Service after the DD214

Tucked away on the backside of campus you will find the Veterans Assistance office. On most days in the afternoon it will not be uncommon to find the President of the Veterans Club, Troy Garcia hanging out in the office plotting his next move to better serve the veterans on Chattanooga State campus.

Mr. Garcia who served a total of fourteen years in the Army with ten of those years coming by way of active duty, now serves his brothers and sisters in arms with passion and a vision to make the college experience for veterans as smooth as possible. Kevin Baker, a member of the Veterans Club and current student says, “Troy has great ideas and is very motivated. He truly bridges the gap with veterans to aide in their educational success.”

Garcia splits his time on campus between classes and club activities. When he is not engaged in the two somehow he still manages to be involved in the Stats Tutor for Veterans program. Garcia, a Political Science major has been involved with the veteran’s office since the beginning of his fall 2017 enrollment. He noticed that the Veterans Club did not participate with a lot of other clubs and organizations and felt personally that the face of the Veterans Club may have had an intimidating look that he hoped to change.

Currently Garcia and the members of the club alongside the Adult Students and Psychology clubs are working on a new project call “Welcome Home,” a hospice for veterans and non-veterans. The Veterans Club has since Garcia taken the roll of President

worked with Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Veteran Coalition, Chattanooga Vet Center, and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Garcia a staple in the veteran community on campus provides service with a smile. A leader of his peers, a friend to the stranger, and a hard working student with a vision to give what it takes for the success of others are just a few qualities on this heroes resume.
